This week we are asking our community to reach out to their local city councils about statements of support for Julian Assange and a free press. The easiest way to find the contacts for your local council is simply to search for your city’s website.
Information To Share;
- I recommend sharing This Motion from the Melbourne City Council about their support for Julian and Wikileaks with your local councils.
- This Article about Melbourne’s support Julian Assange is also another encouraging bit of information which can help provide perspective to your local councilfolk.
I recommend reaching out as soon as possible because there is most likely only 1 or 2 council meetings left before the trial begins at September.
As always, write a letter from your heart and be as encouraging as possible. If you aren’t sure what to say, you can use this template below.
Hello Councilperson,
I am a resident of your city and I am writing you today because I want to encourage you to stand up for free speech and a free press. Julian Assange, the founder and publisher of Wikileaks, is being held in the Guantanamo Bay of the UK known as Belmarsh. On September 7th he will be returning to court to defend himself against US extradition and the threat of 175 years in prison for exposing war crimes.
I would like for the council to speak up in defense of Julian Assange to help raise public awareness about the threat to our press freedom. Please read this article about other councils around the world speaking up in his defense. https://www.docklandsnews.com.au/editions/article/council-goes-into-bat-for-assange_16501/
Attached you will a copy of the motion from the Melbourne Australia City Council about their defense of Julian Assange.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
